Learning Plan:
How will you teach your students how to use Prezi?
We will begin teaching our students about Prezi by quickly introducing them to the technology. Next, we will show our students how to use Prezi by showing them the instructional video created by the Prezi team. Finally, we will teach our students about Prezi by giving them a few minutes to play around with Prezi, do the website's training tasks, and ask any questions they may have about the technology.
Where are your students headed? Where have they been? How will you make sure the students know where they are going?
Our students are aware of general cultural stereotypes such as asians are good at math but have not critically thought about gender stereotypes perpetuated by the media. Therefore, this unit is designed to serve as an introduction to critical analysis of media. We will make sure the students know where they are going by explaining to them the reasoning behind every activity. We will let them know that all activites, class work, and homework are part of a process to help them develop critical thinking skills with regards to media.
How will you hook students at the beginning of the unit?
The fact that students will be able to choose what movie they would like to analyze for the final Prezi project is essential to maintaining interest. In addition, music videos and television shows which they must analyze daily is up to their discretion, which we suspect they will be pleased of learning. Moreover, the Prezi groups will be formed by the students which provides them with a sense of power and control over their learning.
What events will help students experience and explore the big idea and questions in the unit? How will you equip them with needed skills and knowledge?
The in-class activity where they will be asked to list famous people in a variety of occupations will be the first stepping stone to the realization that gender roles continue to be an issue. Activities and homework will equip them with the needed skills and knowledge.
How will you cause students to reflect and rethink? How will you guide them in rehearsing, revising, and refining their work?
The very first lesson involves reflection as students will be asked to think about their childhood. They will be asked to think about the earliest forms of gender role teaching they have encountered. Specifically, they are asked to recall and write a reflection paper about any television shows (cartoons etc.), but they are permitted to also reflect about toys, clothes or any other experience regarding gender roles as a young child.
How will you help students to exhibit and self-evaluate their growing skills, knowledge, and understanding throughout the unit?
Discussions about the daily logs regarding gender role observation in the media (television shows/music videos) should improve as students exchange their ideas, broaden their understanding of gender roles and stereotypes, and gain insight as the difficulty of identifying the perpetuation of gender roles in media decreases over time.
How will you tailor and otherwise personalize the learning plan to optimize the engagement and effectiveness of ALL students, without compromising the goals of the unit?
Students have flexibility with regards to their assignments. They are able to do assignments based on their individual interests which is essential to ensuring that they remain engaged.
How will you organize and sequence the learning activities to optimize the engagement and achievement of ALL students?
We have organized the learning activities in a coherent and cohessive manner. Students are given simple introductory activites which will slowly increase in difficulty, but students will not be overwhelmed. Lectures are kept to a minimum and group work is based on their personal interests; this is essential to keep them engaged and to facilitate achievement.
